NATO AND CYPRUS: UN, 22 – The government confirmed today it has rejected the mediation of NATO Secretary-General Lord Ismay, who offered his good servces in the attempt to settle the Cyprus issue. A memorandum submitted today to the UN secretary-general by the Greek permanent representative says: «In the Greek government’s opinion, it is not possible to accept Lord Ismay’s proposal, since no constructive dialogue can be had in the absence of the main interested parties, the Cypriot people.» Moreover, continued the memorandum, «the Cyprus issue is still pending at the UN, and a resolution passed by the UN Security Council still has not been enacted. The Greek government is not willing to sidestep the UN. The only way to resolve the Cyprus issue is for negotiations to resume between the British government and the Cypriot people in accordance with the General Assembly resolution.» FAULKNER: The Athens Academy is to hold an official reception on Thursday for American writer William Faulkner, who is to be presented with the Academy’s silver medal.
