A new vision for Europe
It’s hard to be optimistic about the European Union these days. A vision that was born from the ashes of the Second World War, which produced the 1957 coal and steel agreement and which was meant to culminate in the political unification of the continent, has been stymied by growing skepticism among European populaces which was manifested in the massive rejection of the European Constitution in France and the Netherlands. Despite the low spirits and the absence of clear goals, everyone realizes that the EU is our new political domain. This is where we will discuss problems and settle all sorts of social, political and national issues. In a sense, the first EU goal has been achieved. «Old» Europe has enjoyed a long period of peace. Realizing a new vision is complex. The EU must achieve high growth while preserving its social welfare systems. This is the wager of the national governments and the people. A difficult goal, but not impossible.
