A new strategic partnership
Foreign political leaders have often used the term «strategic partner» to stress the importance of their bilateral ties with Greece. At the White House, many US presidents have employed the term to refer to the relationship between Athens and Washington. It goes without saying that a solid Greek-American relationship is crucial to our national interests because of Washington’s global role. The past few months, however, have seen the emergence of another strategic partnership, namely that between Athens and Moscow. The personal interest shown by Russian President Vladimir Putin, the investment plans of Russian firms and the convergence of Greek and Russian foreign policy in the Balkans have created the conditions for a long-term strategic partnership. Greece stands to gain a lot in sectors such as tourism and investment.
