PAVLOS AND THE PEOPLE: At an official event held yesterday at the School of Economics and Commerce (ASOEE), King Pavlos of Greece was awarded an honorary doctorate. In reply to a speech by the rector, Stratis Andreadis, the king spoke about the mission of educational institutions and important economic and social issues, particularly those concerning the living standards of the Greek people. «Today I am concerned about a more practical issue, the living standards of the Greek people… Sadly, despite the admirable efforts of all postwar governments… my people’s standard of living is still very low. Yet I am optimistic because I know that they are capable not only of raising that standard, but of acquiring wealth. The excellent people of Greece, apart from their mental capacity, are also gifted with simplicity, honesty, hard work and great abilities. I am certain that is only a matter of time before living standards improve… However I have a responsibility, as do the the democratically elected representatives of the people and this tertiary education institute – whose job it is – to produce enlightened leaders to carry out the job of improving the country’s economy.»
