BRITISH NUCLEAR BOMB: London, 15 – The first British thermonuclear explosion was conducted today at a great altitude over Christmas Island. The official announcement was released by the British government without any further details. In Washington, official US sources expressed satisfaction that Great Britain was able to successfully carry out its first thermonuclear test, since this would boost the free world’s defense capability. Although American leaders had last year expressed concern at the likelihood of other nations’ acquiring atomic weapons, they do not conceal their satisfaction that Great Britain has succeeded in doing so. The United States had sent observers to Christmas Island (…). ARTHUR MILLER’S TRIAL: Washington, 15 – Celebrated dramatist Arthur Miller, who is married to famous actress Marilyn Monroe, is being tried for refusing to name the communist writers he had known since 1947, when testifying one year ago before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Miller stated that his decision was a matter of conscience. Monroe did not attend the trial.
