Setting the facts straight on feta

On Tuesday, April 9, your newspaper carried a report on its front page under the heading «Bleak outlook for Danish, Irish feta.» The heading was unfortunate since it conveyed an incorrect impression: While many excellent varieties of cheese (such as «Regato») are produced in Ireland, our dairy industry does not attempt to replicate feta. No such cheese is produced in Ireland. As regards the meeting in Brussels which was the subject of the report, my information was that a formal vote on the proposal to register feta as an exclusively Greek product was not in fact taken and that the relevant committee will return to the question in about two months’ time. I have been working on bringing home to my authorities the importance of the issue for Greece and will be continuing those efforts prior to the next discussion of the matter in Brussels. Editor replies: We regret the mistake in our headline and thank the ambassador for pointing it out.
