CYPRUS AND THE UNITED STATES: Istanbul, 13 – «The United States are prepared to use every possible means to help find a just solution to the Cyprus problem,» said the US permanent representative to NATO George Perkins yesterday… He added that the United States believes this dispute can be resolved peacefully through negotiations between the interested parties, that is Turkey, Great Britain, Greece and the people of Cyprus. Cyprus, he said, could be used as a military base for NATO, although it was not possible to say how beneficial this would be. «This solution is neither logical nor just and could create problems,» the NATO representative said. EARLY TOMATOES IN CRETE: Ierapetra – Unusual activity has been observed in Lasithi, in the furthest reaches of southeastern Crete, where thousands of tons of tomatoes are being loaded onto ships bound for the port of Piraeus every day. Lasithi farmers, with the assistance of the state, have made a systematic effort to increase their production and export of this perishable food.
