Prudent aid management

It goes without saying that the authorities must be swift in responding to disasters and providing aid to victims. The same holds for the management of Greek taxpayers’ money. Everyone welcomed the government’s decision to increase emergency aid to 3,000 euros per person. The respective amounts are to be disbursed without delay. Money for fire relief is being contributed from all over the country, not only via the state budget but also private donations. But officials in charge must bear in mind that this money should be distributed in the most efficient way. It is comforting that the officials in charge of the fund that will manage private donations are people of experience and proven honesty. Undoubtedly, some officials may try to benefit from the state of emergency. But every single euro that goes into their pockets is one euro less for the fire victims. The government must ensure that this does not happen.
