FIDEL CASTRO: New York, 4 – There was a radio report here today that followers of the Cuban guerrilla leader Fidel Castro had seized a police station in the town of Cienfuegos in central Cuba, and were being supported by navy units as large crowds poured into the streets shouting: «President [Fulgencio] Batista has fallen.» Government airplanes mercilessly bombed the rebel-occupied police station, which was being defended by 400 rebels, and government troops were reported heading toward the town. Later in the day, the Batista government announced that these forces had put down the uprising and that order had been restored. USSR’S ARTIFICIAL SATELLITES: London, 31 – Moscow radio today broadcast that Russia will soon launch two kinds of artificial satellites to orbit the Earth. One will shine brighter than the largest star and will be monitored by observatories for data that will help determine the precise shape of the Earth and its irregularities. The other satellite will carry scientific equipment that will be able to send various data to observers.
