PASOK crosses the line

It’s less than two weeks from the elections and the political stage has already been seized by polarizing rhetoric. To some extent, this was only to be expected, as the two main parties stake everything ahead of the ballot. Heavy rhetoric is one thing but poison-tipped barbs that discredit the country’s institutions is quite another. The jibe «judicial coup d’etat» used by PASOK socialists in reference to the ineligibility of Fofi Gennimata’s candidacy for parliament was groundless and quite contrary to the political culture of a modern party. PASOK’s allegation was reminiscent of bygone times and is quite unjustifiable given that it was the opposition itself that took a poor or, at the very least, controversial decision. This newspaper can only reject excessive posturing during the campaign period. Kathimerini has criticized the thoughtless usage of the term «asymmetrical threat» and now feels obliged to do the same with PASOK’s reaction to the Supreme Court ruling.
