Strong government, consensus needed

As the tension mounts ahead of the elections, it is natural for all the party leaders to stress that they are not interested in post-election alliances. A few days before Sunday’s poll, the party heads are focused primarily on corralling their traditional voters. There is no doubt that at this time Greece needs a strong government that will dare to make the reforms that society needs. But these reforms cannot be implemented without a broad consensus. When the polling stations close, the time of responsibility will begin. Irrespective of who wins and who loses, all the party heads must try to sit down at the same table and ascertain whether they can agree on a minimum of changes and reforms. The weaknesses of our state were made glaringly evident by the great catastrophe of the forest fires. The country needs a strong government and a prime minister with the will to solve these problems. But it needs also a responsible stance from as many politicians as possible.
