Clean solutions to dirty problems
Nicolas Sarkozy followed a no-frills recipe to secure the seat of power. He didn’t try to hide the truth from his people. And he was rewarded for this. That same no-frills recipe is now enabling him to implement incisive reforms in the public and social security sectors: He lay the problems on the line and called on all the social partners to assume their responsibilities. He proposed radical changes, as well as simply logical ones – to abolish vested interests and to improve the public administration’s productivity. Those clean solutions being put forward by Sarkozy should serve as an example in Greek politics. Our country too is in dire need of radical reforms, but also in need of honesty. The government, opposition and social partners should live up to their responsibilities. They should rapidly and radically reform all the mechanisms that are sucking away our national wealth. But would they dare to follow in the footsteps of the French?
