Clear message in Nobel award

Awarding this year’s Nobel Peace Prize to Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) shows that the planet’s top priority has become protecting the environment. Gore deserves the prize because he has brought the issue onto the world stage, suggested practical measures to deal with the greenhouse effect and has forced world leaders to take a stand. We hope that his example will be followed by Greek politicians, particularly those who are in positions of power. At present, the government has a very capable and qualified deputy minister with responsibility for the environment, but the government has not dared to take the next step. The message in yesterday’s Nobel award is clear: Concerning ourselves with protecting the planet is the top priority of the 21st century. Whoever hasn’t realized that simply belongs back in a past day and age.
