The Socialist party in crisis

Ongoing developments within the opposition socialist party PASOK do no credit to its cadres or the political system at large. PASOK is one of Greece’s mainstream political parties and one of the pillars of the country’s democratic system. The boorish confrontation between the two rival camps is a bad omen for Greece’s body politik. The personal insults have left a very deep scar on the Socialist party but the consequences may well be further reaching. The conflict could have been beneficial for the political system. The solutions to the big problems dogging the country can only come via constructive synthesis of the many different opinions. Different views however are one thing, but personal attacks are quite another. PASOK officials should consider the party’s voters and the role bestowed on them by the Constitution. They should take a breather and ponder what happened to the united, strong PASOK.
