NIKOS SKALKOTTAS: A statue of the composer Nikos Skalkottas is to be unveiled at noon today in the main square in Halkida, the composer’s birthplace. The work of the sculptor Antonis Karahalios, the statue was commissioned by the Rotary Club of Halkida. Shortly beforehand there will be a concert of the composer’s works at the Lucy cinema. NATIONAL COMMEMORATION: Athens was bedecked in numerous national flags for the commemoration of the October 28 day of remembrance. SYNTAGMA SQUARE: The installation of new street lights is continuing apace. CINEMA CLUB: Screenings by the Cinema Club of Jean Renoir’s film «La Chienne» begin this evening at the Asty cinema. HERMAN MELVILLE: Professor Georgios Kalfoglou of Cambridge University will be be presenting the life and work of the great 19th century American writer Herman Melville on Armed Forces Radio this evening, as part of a series by the Institute of American Studies. The presentation will be accompanied by interesting American music. REGISTRATION: The Cinema and Theater Academy in Kaningos Square is accepting student registration until the end of the month.
