MAKARIOS APPEALS TO US: New York, 18 (From our correspondent) – Archibishop Makarios of Cyprus told a press conference in Boston yesterday that he would soon be back on the island, adding that he had asked the United States to support Cyprus’s liberation struggle because it would be «a mistake not to back the Cypriot people’s demand to be freed from subjugation.» The archbishop’s statement comes amid reports from various sources that the British government has already decided to announce the return of Makarios to Cyprus, at the same time that the new governor of Cyprus, Sir Hugh Foot, takes up his post. It is believed that Makarios will be in Athens around December 10, returning by air. THREATS TO ARCHBISHOP: The Turkish secret organization «Volkan» has distributed proclamations in the Turkish sector of Nicosia, addressing the head of the National Cypriot Fighters’ Organization (EOKA), General Georgios Grivas, warning, «You might be able to engage in terrorist activities and be successful, but if your leader Archbishop Makarios returns to Cyprus, on his arrival he will find himself confronted by six of our silver bullets.»
