Was Papandreou the greatest PM?

You reported in the December 31 edition of Kathimerini English Edition that, in a poll, almost half of Greeks said that Andreas Papandreou was this country’s greatest prime minister since the return of democracy. This reminds me of a recent similar poll taken in Portugal where a majority said that their greatest prime minister was the ruinous dictator Antonio Salazar who did much to keep that country in a backward state from which it has yet to fully recover. Commentators put this choice down to «ignorance.» Portugal and Greece, as we know, have many things in common. PETER KYRIAKEAS-KIRK, Stoupa, Messinia.
