One problem for every solution

While Athens drowns in a sea of garbage that poses a health hazard to its residents, POE-OTA, the union that represents municipal workers, including garbage men, is holding a sit-in demonstration at Athens City Hall. Its demand that the municipal council condemn the operation in Elaionas of a relay station where garbage is collected has demonstrated that the unionists have one problem for every solution – even if that solution concerns the health of millions of people. The city is being taken over by trash for the sake of a small minority. Public health is at risk as piles of rubbish rot on our very doorsteps. This shows that the element of responsibility, which is key to the success of any labor struggle, is missing from the union leaders in the local administration organizations. The bigger the piles of trash, the bigger the collective indignation. And this is, above all, working against the workers.
