VERA ZAVITSIANOU: (From a review of a performance by the Art Theater) – Karolos Koun has staged «Summer and Smoke» with the same perfection as Tennessee Williams’s other plays. One could say that he has a predilection for the particular writer and no detail escapes him when directing one of Williams’s plays. As for the acting, special mention must be made of Vera Zavitsianou in the role of Alma. This young actress who has already made a name for herself in the Art Theater, has given us a fine example of her talents in this production. From the beginning and right until the end of the play she fills the stage with the painful presence of the young girl she portrays. YUGOSLAVIA: The Yugoslav National Assembly has unanimously re-elected Field Marshal Josip Broz Tito as the country’s president for the third time. After thanking the Assembly, Tito made a low-key speech saying he would always implement a policy of peaceful cooperation with all countries, irrespective of their social structure. MAURICE GUSTAVE GAMELIN: Paris, 18 – It has been announced that General Gamelin, head of the French armed forces in World War II, died this evening after several weeks in hospital.
