OPINION

Earth Day? Really?

It might perhaps be considered overly sarcastic to say that Greece is today celebrating Earth Day, with its censure for failing to comply with the emissions limitations laid down by the Kyoto Protocol, if it were not for the fact that the situation is actually much more serious. The insistence of the Ministry of Public Works to be responsible also for the environment first of all has had – and continues to have – serious consequences for the lives, and health, of each person in this country. Then there is the shame of Greece being the first – and only – country to have been called to task under the terms of the Kyoto Protocol. Indeed, things have gone too far for the Ministry of Public Works to downplay and even joke about the numerous warnings it has received. The government can no longer play with the environment. It has a long-overdue obligation to sit down and formulate an effective policy in this domain.
