Consumer victims

The contaminated sunflower oil was detected by a French company and has now been withdrawn from the local market. However, subsequent revelations concerning the production and distribution of dangerous foodstuffs are a cause for sadness and concern: ruthless producers who trade enormous quantities of goods without paying heed to laws and principles; big firms that fail to conduct efficient quality checks and monitoring; state authorities that fail to live up to their task and European Union legislation with suspicious loopholes. A dangerous mix of negligence and malign that puts public health at risk. But when this ultimate good is reduced to a playground for unscrupulous profiteers who are free from outside control, the subject obviously becomes a political one. The citizen is reduced to a powerless and unprotected consumer. Politicians must take action in order to safeguard the public health under threat.
