COMMUNISTS ARRESTED: Police in Kifissia and Nea Ionia have over the past few days broken up an illegal Communist Party (KKE) cell. They managed to discover and arrest an escapee from Vourla prison, the dangerous communist Michalis Kolokotronis, and have discovered his link with a prominent member of the United Democratic Left (EDA), Frixos Protogerelis, private secretary to one of the members of EDA’s executive committee and parliamentary deputy Ilias Iliou. Commenting on the arrests, the interior minister made the following announcement yesterday: «Agents of the security police force of Kifissia and Nea Ionia last Monday arrested prison escapee Michalis Kolokotronis who was being hidden in the home of Frixos Protogerelis, who was also arrested.» The case is of particular importance for the following reasons: Kolokotronis was a prisoner serving a sentence for spying on port facilities and other places of military significance. Secondly, Kolokotronis, who escaped from prison on July 17, 1955, re-established his links with the illegal espionage section of the Communist Party and hid in various private homes found for him by the KKE.
