Time for EU to welcome Serbia

The arrest of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic earlier this week has helped Serbia turn a page. Most importantly, Karadzic, indicted for war crimes, was caught by Serbian authorities, signaling that the country has for a long time sought to purge its image of the tragic events that followed the collapse of the former Yugoslavia. Now it’s time for Europeans to show generosity toward the Serbian people who have demonstrated that they believe in the European vision. Serbia is an historic country that must find its footing on the path of development and democracy – and it needs all the help that it can get to achieve this. It’s time to overcome the traumas caused by the Kosovo war. The Europeans must finally show Belgrade that they are ready to allow Serbia on board. Making Serbia a member of the EU family would be a great step in promoting stability and prosperity in the Balkan region.
