Hu visit a major opportunity

Chinese President Hu Jintao, the head of a gigantic country which is not only a massive geopolitical power but is also rapidly developing into a formidable economic force, is expected to be in the Greek capital for an official visit on Monday. We must not, however, neglect to remember that China’s rapid economic development has also turned it into a major lender around the globe in these dire economic times, when countries are suffering serious cash flow problems. While the Chinese president is in Athens, the Greek government should take care not to waste the opportunities that his visit presents; it must take full advantage of the official talks that are planned to discuss cooperation between the two countries. China’s investment in Greece’s port facilities is just the beginning of what could grow to become a beneficial partnership, and the government must look for other ways to forge economic cooperation, not only as far as Chinese investments in Greece are concerned, but also in terms of Greek exports to China.
