A time to reflect on the future

The holiday season is a good time to take a moment to reflect upon the issues that concern us and rearrange our thoughts, especially as this year, 2008, is leaving us with deep scars of a financial, social and political nature. All of our political leaders, and not just those who are in power, should also seize this opportunity to consider their responsibilities and muster the strength and courage required under the present circumstances to make a bid for change and to launch new initiatives. Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis in particular finds himself at a critical point, at a crossroad, as the Cabinet reshuffle that has been lined up for the new year is expected to play a serious role in determining what course the country takes in the future. Opposition leader George Papandreou, in turn, is also burdened with a major responsibility in 2009 as public opinion polls have put his party in the lead and he now needs to prove that he and his party will be capable of running the country if they are ever called upon to do so.
