No time to start new fires
There is mounting concern over Ankara’s continued provocative stance in the Aegean, a stance whose purpose is to cast into doubt Greece’s sovereign rights and create gray zones. Led by President Karolos Papoulias, Greece has taken the right approach by dealing with this situation with a strong, firm and steady manner. It will take a very cool head and some tactful diplomatic maneuvering if we want to avoid reaching a difficult situation in which Ankara presents us with a fait accompli and a crisis develops in the Aegean. In order for this necessary calmness to exist, however, Greece’s politicians and its media should be cautious and careful in choosing their words and deciding what to say to the public. They should not be lighting fires in order to maximize their benefits from the situation, because Greece’s territorial rights are a very serious issue that should not be used to chase a few votes or score points with viewers.
