GLEZOS AFFAIR: According to a government announcement, the international communist movement has launched a new wave of propaganda regarding the mobilization of communists around the world following the arrest in Greece of certain communist spies. This uproar, said the announcement, is another instance of the all-too-familiar communist tactics used during the 1946-49 war against the outlaws, in the trial of Nikos Beloyiannis and the Rosenbergs, among other things, aimed at broader goals than protecting a few allegedly persecuted «democratic citizens» or »patriots.» These tactics are aimed at giving Greece a bad name by presenting it as a »police state» and by creating the impression, particularly in countries behind the Iron Curtain, that democratic freedoms, which are free countries’ strongest ideological weapon, are nonexistent, since people in these countries are prosecuted for their political beliefs. Unfortunately, the United Democratic Left (EDA) is instigating this latest anti-Greek campaign that has led to foreign governments and organizations involving themselves in the country’s domestic affairs (over the imprisonment of leftist resistance fighter Manolis Glezos).
