A step in the right direction

The measures that were announced yesterday by the government aimed at cracking down on rampaging hooded youths and protecting businesses and citizens in downtown Athens are a positive step and certainly in the right direction. They come at a time when people are fed up with the chaos and destruction and are demanding that something be done. However, there is still a great deal to be done and the government and the police force need to start by effectively enforcing those laws that have already been passed. For example, in cases where illegal acts are being committed on premises otherwise protected by university asylum laws. If the authorities set up a reliable information network and become better organized, they will be better placed to curb the violence that we have witnessed in the country’s cities in recent months. All that they need is the courage to do their jobs in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and the laws of the land.
