No room, no time for vacillation

The country is facing a serious public security crisis and this is something that everyone is feeling quite sharply at the present time, making it even more imperative for the government to formulate a policy focusing on contentious issues such as university asylum and dealing with terrorist attacks and vandalism. Most importantly, this is not the time to have ministers adopting different positions on these matters, just as it is not the time for disagreements between the various agencies that have been entrusted with handling such issues. There needs to be one government official alone who will answer to the prime minister and everyone else in positions of responsibility should answer to him or her. This is no time for half-measures and hesitation on the part of the government. Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis needs to take a firm stand on all policies relating to public safety and he must draw up a clear strategy, because all this beating around the bush and contradictory statements by various members of government can no longer be tolerated in times such as these.
