Don’t let tax dodgers off hook

At a time when Greek citizens are being hit with one-off taxes that the conservative government has unveiled this week as part of its effort to tackle the economic crisis, it is outrageous that the archives of the Economy and Finance Ministry are still full of outstanding cases involving high-profile tax evaders. One can only imagine the potential funds that the economy is being deprived of because the government is failing to bring these tax dodgers to account. There is no doubt that responsibility for the foot-dragging and the huge pileup of outstanding cases lies with the previous New Democracy officials that were in charge of managing economic affairs. That said, the current administration of the Economy Ministry, which has inherited this challenging problem, must deal with these cases in accordance with the law and without any further ado. If it follows in the footsteps of those that were in charge before, then the law-abiding taxpayers of this country will have every reason to feel victimized.
