PASOK must heed the warnings
The government is making a serious mistake by trying to launch attacks against those who openly voice their concerns about the future of the country’s economy and by looking for conspiracies behind the movement of the market and announcements by officials concerned with Greece’s finances. What the government needs to do, and do it soon, is to put its socialist outlook behind it and take a long, hard look at the dynamics of both the international and domestic markets, heed the warnings of international credit rating agencies and follow European directives about our finances to the letter. If it continues to ignore these factors and fails to take serious measures to curb public spending, the debt crisis it inherited from the previous administration will very soon become its own and it will have to then exclusively shoulder the blame. Prime Minister George Papandreou needs to show resolve. He needs to roll up his sleeves and pledge his support for his finance minister before the Greek economy runs completely off the rails. The longer the adjustment takes, the heavier the toll will be when it all comes crashing down, and not just for the government, but for the country as a whole.
