Democracy will pay the price

«Protests cannot be used as an excuse to carry out illegal acts. Everyone’s right to protest ends where the other’s right to life, freedom and work begins.» These were the words uttered yesterday by President Karolos Papoulias at the meeting of party leaders, which was only attended by three of these five politicians. Now these words need to be adopted and lead to the immediate introduction of measures aimed at safeguarding human life and liberty, as well as improving the increasingly impossible conditions for people working in downtown Athens and protecting public and private property. The party leaders who did attend the president’s meeting yesterday represent the overwhelming majority of the people and they have the right to draw up the laws of the land. One section of the left has decided to follow an irrational path by flouting the Greek Constitution and the country’s laws. If we allow it to continue down this path, the price that will be paid by the institution of democracy and by the country as a whole will be incalculable.
