Saying ‘no’ to extreme reaction

Groups affiliated with left-wing parties are persisting down a road that will yield nothing more than higher unemployment and lead the country to an even worse impasse than the one in which it finds itself today. Their latest move has been to threaten to block cruise ships wanting to berth at Greek ports. The Greek economy is heavily reliant on tourism even at the best of times; today, tourism is its most crucial sector and it has already suffered enough. Such a move would deal another serious blow and further tarnish Greece’s image, which is already making prospective visitors and investors wary. If the majority of society and Greece’s politicians respond to these ludicrous actions in a determined and direct manner, they may be able to stem the reactionary tide. But if they allow these groups free rein, the cost for the country will be inestimable.
