Jobs needed for the young

The unemployment rate for the country’s youth is a chronic Greek problem that could lead to very explosive situations. We have already seen that there is a brewing feeling of injustice among the country’s young people, which could have a devastating impact if it were unleashed. According to official data released yesterday, one in three, or 32.5 percent, of Greeks aged 15 to 25, are out of work, compared to 25 percent in May last year. The solution to this problem, beyond increasing special government programs designed to help young people find work, is restructuring the economy so that it becomes easier for businesses to employ young people, while also providing firms with the appropriate incentives to do so. We have bequeathed an enormous amount of public debt to the next generation and the least we can do is open a clear path to employment for them. We need to give the young people of this country some hope that they can lead productive lives with dignity.
