Laws are not just leverage

Ongoing strikes by haulage truck drivers have led to a dire situation on many different levels that needs to be curtailed immediately. While we may sympathize with the truck drivers to some extent and understand their anger at the government’s privatization policy, the law has been passed and it should not be allowed to be flouted just because some people don’t like it. The government, meanwhile, must stop going on and on about how the law will be enforced, because every time it says this, all the while making threats that it will take steps to end the strike, and then fails to follow through, it only succeeds in making a mockery of the concept of the state as a functional system to enforce the law. The government needs to show respect for the state and its laws by enforcing them without any further delay. As far as the main opposition New Democracy party is concerned, it too needs to show that it stands behind its initial position on the issue of deregulation and to support the government when it comes to enforcing the law.
