FAROUK DETHRONED: London, 26 – Radio Cairo announced today that King Farouk has abdicated and is leaving Egypt immediately. According to unconfirmed reports, Farouk refused to accept amendments to the Constitution requested by the military. He therefore decided to abdicate in favor of his son Prince Ahmet Fuad. Field Marshal Naguib – the leader of the revolution who was yesterday named field marshal by the Cabinet and sworn in as commander of the armed forces – in a statement to the nation said that today was a day of action and asked the people to be calm. (…) King Farouk’s decision to abdicate was made known to the 20 million inhabitants of Egypt by a royal decree that said: «I wish my beloved people of Egypt happiness, peace and progress.» OLYMPIC GAMES: Helsinki, 26 (From our correspondent) – Our national champion Ioannis Koutsis today scored a unique Olympic victory for Greece, winning sixth place in the clay pigeon shooting event, scoring 187 out of 200. NATIONAL THEATER: A decree appointing the new board of the National Theater was sent yesterday to the palace for the king’s signature. The new members are the Cabinet ministers Mr Novas and Mr Evelpidis and Messrs Papanoutsos, Venezis, Haris, Politis, Tzannis, Manoledakis and Deliyiannis.
