Soccer hooligans

I wanted to draw your attention to the shameful behavior of Greek Olympiakos fans attending the Olympiakos – Maccabi Haifa game in Cyprus (September 26). Before the match, Olympiakos fans attacked the Israeli fans in the streets of Nicosia. After the game, Olympiakos fans once again attacked Maccabi fans at Larnaca Airport. Normal heckling is expected, but not «Kill the Jews,» and «Heil Hitler.» I doubt your newpaper wrote anything about this shameful action. What a pity. I am sure many Israelis may choose to avoid your wonderful country, after seeing their fellow countrymen beaten by Greeks. TAL MUSCAL, Jerusalem. Editor replies: Greek soccer fans, as in many other countries, are notoriously badly behaved. This is not to excuse the shameful behavior you refer to, but please keep in mind that there is probably nothing personal or ethnically oriented in these attacks: These people reserve their greatest violence for the fans of other teams in their own city and are in no way racially, materially or religiously different to them. Greece remains a safe and hospitable country.
