US Independence Day celebration

Democrats Abroad Greece invites all American citizens who happen to find themselves in Greece on US Independence Day to gather up families and friends (of any nationality) and join them for a traditional July 4th picnic on Sunday, July 3, 6.30 p.m. at Hotel Calypso in Anavyssos, southern Attica.

There will be fireworks, at 9 p.m., singing of the ?Star-Spangled Banner,? hot dogs, home-made salads, ice cream and swimming.

The group will gather at the beach of the Hotel Calypso. This is a fine secluded cove with lovely views and ample free parking. It is near Anavyssos, shortly after the kilometer 48 marker on the Sounion road. There are tables and chairs, ample shade, a protected swimming area, rest-rooms, and other facilities.

Entrance is free. Hot dogs (with salads), corn on the cob and beer will be on sale to raise money for the 2012 voter registration drive.

Make sure to e-mail ([email protected]) or call Brady Kiesling, DAGR secretary, on tel 210.322.7463 to state whether you will be attending.

Also, DAGR is looking for volunteers to make potato and similar traditional salads, to assist with ticket-taking and to help clean up the beach afterwards.

For people without a car, the beach is accessible by public bus, the KTEL Sounion bus (telephone 210.880.8081), which stops right a two-minute walk above the beach (at the big sign for the Calypso Hotel). An efficient place to catch it is outside the Syngrou-Fix Metro station. Car-pools will be arranged back to Athens.
