Olympiakos calls for state contribution

Olympiakos officials are putting pressure on the State to contribute to the costs of refurbishing the derelict Karaiskaki Stadium, which will serve as the soccer final venue during the 2004 Olympics and as a home ground for Olympiakos. «Time passes fast and it is imperative to make a decision as soon as possible,» Olympiakos official Leonidas Theodorakakis said yesterday. Theodorakakis is not directly involved in the operations of the soccer club but is in charge of Olympiakos’s all «amateur» sports divisions. The intervention, coming on the heels of a statement by Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos that an agreement will be reached soon, puzzled government officials, who have given the use of the stadium to Olympiakos. The soccer club is expected to foot the refurbishment bill.
