Federation to hire Zouros for national team
Zalgiris Kaunas coach Ilias Zouros appears certain to become the new coach of the Greek national team, which might ease his disappointment from his team’s loss to Olympiakos with a 78-64 score on March 3.
Zouros secured a special leave from his Lithuanian team, in order to discuss his possible hiring with the Hellenic Basketball Federation on March 4, according to reports.
If he does get hired, Zouros will work on a part-time basis. Asked about the prospect of becoming Greece’s coach, Zouros said: «I feel honored, but at the moment my job is with Zalgiris and I have not got any more news about Greece. I do not know if something happens, but it will become evident in the coming days.»
Zouros has also served as coach of Olympiakos and Panellinios, among other teams.
His former team, Olympiakos outplayed his current one, Zalgiris, in a game that had no bearing on the outcome of their Euroleague pool.
Rasho Nesterovic was Olympiakos’s top scorer with 20 points.
The Reds finished first and will face Siena in the best-of-five quarterfinal playoffs, enjoying the home advantage.
