Athinaikos wins women’s cup

Athinaikos won the Greek Women’s Cup on April 4 at Iloupoli, after struggling to beat outsider Proteas Voulas 64-61.

Facing a stronger challenge than expected, the Vyronas side, which is the breakaway league leader, finally managed to scrape through after trailing 52-51 after the third period in a game that was both close and entertaining.

As a result, Athinaikos won the cup for the second consecutive year thanks to 15 points from LaToya Davis and 14 from Ruth Riley, while German forward Linda Frohlich was the final’s top scorer, registering 20 points for Proteas.

Separately, Greek superstar Evina Maltsi announced on April 4 that she may leave the national team after the European Championship this summer in Poland.

Maltsi, 32, was voted the Most Valuable Player of the previous Eurobasket, played in Latvia in 2009.
