Reds take lead in final series

It took Olympiakos five sets to transform from underdog to favorite in the Volleyleague final series after winning Game 1 at Iraklis on April 27.

The match lasted just under two-and-a-half hours amid a good atmosphere — a welcome surprise for Greek volleyball at the moment.

Led by an impressive Dimitris Tzourits, the Reds overcame Iraklis’s strong start — the hosts won the first set 25-17 — to take a 2-1 lead by winning the next couple of sets 25-21 and 25-18.

Playing in front of a capacity crowd at Thessaloniki, Iraklis fought back to claim the fourth set 30-28 and force a tiebreak.

However, the Blues were unable to respond to the Olympiakos serve and block and surrendered with a 15-10 that gave Olympiakos a 3-2 win.

Game 2 of the best-of-five series will take place on April 29, again at Thessaloniki.
