Olympiakos wins sixth consecutive cup in water polo

Olympiakos won its 10th Greek cup in men?s water polo in the last 11 years and its 14th overall after beating Panionios in the final on Kalymnos on June 4.

The Reds were dominant throughout and won 10-8 to seal their domestic superiority. They were even leading by four goals (8-4 and 10-6) before relaxing in the end to win the club?s sixth consecutive cup. Panionios, which gave up its lead after being ahead 2-1, had complaints about the referees? decisions, but were in fact outclassed by Olympiakos. ?They did not need the referees? assistance,? said Panionios?s Costas Kokkinakis.

This is the fourth consecutive season that Panionios have ended up as the losing cup finalists. It had Andreas Miralis as the final?s top scorer with three goals, but this will be small consolation for the Nea Smyrni team.

Olympiakos?s Tasos Schizas stated that ?we, the players, have done our duty, now it is up to the board to do theirs,? referring to the club?s financial problems.

In the semifinals on June 3, Olympiakos beat Panathinaikos 10-3 and Panionios eliminated Chios, beating it 10-6.
