Greek women beat Russia to go top
The women’s national water polo team topped its group in the first round of the World Championship in Shanghai to advance straight to the quarterfinals, skipping the second round.
The Greeks defeated powerhouse Russia 6-5 on July 21 to complete its sweep in the group, following victories over Spain (10-9) and Brazil (11-8).
Coach Giorgos Morfesis?s players produced a spectacular performance to defeat the reigning European champion and earn a spot in the last eight of the tournament in China.
The Greeks will now face the winner of the Round 2 clash between the Netherlands and New Zealand, with the Dutch being the favorites.
