Women beat the Dutch to make semis

The women’s national team is in the semifinals of the World Championship in Shanghai, after beating the Netherlands 12-10 in the quarterfinals on July 25.

Coach Giorgos Morfesis’s players are in the last four for a second consecutive world championship and will face Italy in the semifinal on July 27.

The Dutch, who are the Beijing Olympics gold medalists, led at the start of the quarterfinal, but the Greeks enjoyed a partial 8-1 score in their favor to take the game beyond their opponents, who did not have enough time to react after that.

Antigoni Roumbesi was Greece’s top scorer with three goals.

“Our original target had been to get to the quarterfinals. We did that by topping our group, which exceeded our expectations, and now we are into the semis we are aiming at a medal,» said Morfesis.

“We have two opportunities to get a medal, but we want to take the first one and go to the final. This is a wide-open tournament [now that] teams like the US, Spain and the Netherlands [are] out of the semifinals,» he added.
