The government is enforcing a full ban on all sports fan clubs until next summer, and their transformation into mere groups of fans fully controlled by the clubs thereafter.
Culture Minister Pavlos Geroulanos announced on July 26 that «fan clubs will cease operating the way they do today, and I do not think there will be many people who will shed a tear upon learning of that development.»
He was speaking to journalists ahead of the tabling of a new sports bill in Parliament, and added that there will also be a blanket ban on groups of away fans (but not individuals).
Geroulanos further stated that the new soccer season will start as scheduled and if any of the clubs are found guilty of match fixing, the penalties will apply in midseason.
The bill also brings back the clause originally introduced by the previous government regarding compulsory jail terms for anyone convicted of sports violence.
