Two-month ban for Mavrokefalidis

The Hellenic Basketball Federation came down hard on Loukas Mavrokefalidis on July 26, imposing a two-month ban for his refusal to join the national team for the European Championship this summer.

The former Olympiakos forward will now have to stay out of competitive basketball for the first couple of months of the new season, which means that his new club, Spartak Saint Petersburg, won?t be able to use him until November.

Mavrokefalidis cited personal issues for refusing to join the Greek squad, without offering any further explanation.

Greece coach Ilias Zouros called up Aris guard Costas Charalambidis to replace injured Vassilis Spanoulis, who had a successful operation on July 25.

Zouros will also have Stratos Perperoglou at his disposal by the end of the week, as the 27-year-old forward has almost recovered from his injury.

Perperoglou also signed a one-year extension to his contract with Panathinaikos, the club announced on July 26.
