Super League changes mind, gets back to 16 teams
The Super League has reverted to a decision for a 16-team championship as on October 21 there were six of its members who disagreed with the decision of three days earlier to expand the league to 18 clubs from the current season.
A stormy meeting on Friday afternoon saw OFI, Ergotelis, Panetolikos, Kerkyra, Atromitos and Xanthi disagree with the rest of the teams who wanted the 18-team league to last for just two seasons. The six clubs asked for the expansion to have a permanent character.
Later the president of the Super League, Apostolos Papoutsakis, stated that it was the federation that had insisted on the top flight reverting to 16 teams from the 2013-2014 season.
However, Larissa president Costas Piladakis countered that stating that the re was no discussion about a federation request at all in the meeting. He added he felt ashamed that he «had chaired that partnership».
All this meant that there was no decision on Friday on which teams, from Levadiakos, Doxa Dramas, Larissa and Panserraikos, would fill the two empty spots in the top division that on Saturday enters its seventh round of games.
The Super League will convene again on Saturday, for the umpteenth time, to decide on that.
