Soccer fans clash in women’s volleyball

Soccer rivalries hurt women?s volleyball once again as the court of Markopoulo witnessed an unlikely clash between rival fans on Saturday that left three people injured and forced the match between the local side and Panathinaikos to be abandoned.

The match had started between Markopoulo and Panathinaikos, with 50 away fans supporting their team peacefully, when a number of men who had their heads and faces covered stormed in and hurled Molotov cocktails, flares and stones at the Panathinaikos fans.

The latter responded and started a pitch battle on the court in the absence of riot police while the athletes rushed into the dressing room for their safety and the home fans, including young children, tried to escape the mayhem.

Sources suggested that the hooded men may have been AEK supporters.
