Second-division sides Thrasyvoulos Fylis and Panserraikos were the only teams outside the Super League to advance to the last 16 of the Greek Cup this week, both by seeing off top-flight opponents.
The favorites went through without problems, but Ergotelis went out to Panserraikos losing 1-0 in extra time at Serres on December 21, after Levadiakos had suffered a shoot-out heartache at Thrasyvoulos a day earlier. The 90 minutes ended with the score at 1-1 and Thrasyvoulos won 4-2 in penalties.
Holder AEK scraped through third-division Kalamata on December 22 with a Steve Beleck goal, in a game marred with crowd violence at half-time.
League leader Olympiakos defeated second-division Pierikos 3-1 at Katerini through two Marko Pantelic goals (the first from the penalty spot) and a strike by Djamel Abdoun.
Panathinaikos needed a goal from its central defender Loukas Vintra to beat second-division Agrotikos Asteras 1-0 at Thessaloniki, while PAOK’s game at Ethnikos Asteras was abandoned when a home fan hurled a chair at the assistant referee.
The president of Ethnikos Asteras claimed the following day that the culprit was not an Ethnikos Asteras supporter but a member of an Olympiakos fan club.
